- Established in the 1980s, Bardia lies in the Western Terai, a region of lowlands between the Himalayas and their foothills further south. The park is relatively hard to reach, especially compared to Chitwan, but the flight and road transfers are worth the effort.

- Peaceful and without a great deal of tangible evidence to confirm the fact, save some ancient ruins and a pillar erected by Emperor Ashoka, it is the atmosphere of Lumbini that makes a visit to this pilgrim site so worthwhile. For the time being at least, the town remains untouched and unspoilt.
