    Brightly painted elephants, fireworks, beating drums, and twirling dancers - Sri Lanka's festivals are as colourful and elaborate as the temples they centre on. The country’s largest festival, the Kandy Perahera revolves around the Buddhist Temple of the Tooth which is a must-see on any visit to Sri Lanka.

Ellerton is a small simple boutique hotel sitting on its own hilltop in the centre of Sri Lanka.

It was built over 100 years ago for the manager of a major tea estate and it preserves the character and tranquillity of the colonial days.

Although rural, with views in all directions, Ellerton is only 15 miles (30 minute drive) from the World Heritage city of Kandy, with its renowned botanical gardens and other tourist attractions.

The property is divided into two parts and has five rooms in total.

The main house has a colonial-style veranda, immediately adjacent to which is the large open-sided pavilion, where meals are normally eaten and which also provides a shady retreat for reading and admiring the view.

Thirty metres away, next to the swimming pool, The Valley House has spectacular views and has three bedrooms, with bathroom or shower.

There is a huge veranda which is a natural place to sit and read or enjoy a meal.
