Pinnewala Elephant Orphanage
Kandy, Sri Lanka
The enchanting excursion to the Elephant Orphanage takes around one hour to drive. En route you will pass many fruit and rubber trees.
Feeding time for the baby elephants is at 9.15am. During the feeding, the young elephants are fed in the enclosure and you may be able to see the older ones working in the fields nearby. After the feeding, at around 10 am, the whole herd of elephants are taken down to the river and the spectacle is utterly charming.
The Millennium Elephant Foundation, just down the road from the Elephant Orphanage, is a much smaller sanctuary which looks after old and sick elephants and has a small museum providing information on these fascinating creatures. They also have some younger, healthy elephants which you can ride if you wish, either a short ride around the yard or longer rides of up to an hour long. Visitors can also join in with washing the elephants as they bathe in the river. An additional fee is charged for the elephant rides and baths which go towards the Foundation's valuable work of providing a mobile veterinary unit for the treatment of elephants all over Sri Lanka.
A visit to the MEF is a great opportunity to see elephants up close away from the tourist flashbulbs. Returning from Pinnewalla, you could stop at the 14th Century Hindu Temples, Highway Museum or Botanical Gardens.
