Giza bans the peddlers: 13-08-2008

Travellers visiting Egypt's world famous Giza Pyramids will be able to do so in peace from now on.
While the offerings of trinkets and camel rides is exciting and endearing at first, they often become overwhelming and infuriating and Egypt's tourism authorities have decided to take action.
The move involves the construction of a chain-link fence fitted with motion sensors to keep troublemakers out.
The new entrance will also have metal detectors and x-ray machines as part of £14 million plans to improve the site which will eventually see tourists driven around the pyramids in golf carts to help protect the underfoot conditions from wear and tear.
Chief archaeologist Zahi Hawass explained the reason for the move.
"It was a zoo," he said of the way peddlers acted.
"Now we are protecting both the tourists and the ancient monuments."
Travellers will now be able to enjoy the site without being hassled, while still having the option to purchase a camel or horse ride or souvenirs from outside the site if they choose.
