US Archaeology school opens in Egypt: 06-11-2008

Travellers in Egypt with an interest in archaeology may notice an influx of American accents at sites around the country.
That is because the University of California Los Angeles (UCLA) has recently opened the country's first official archaeology field school for US students.
According to UCLA Today, students are based 50 miles from Cairo in the Fayum Oasis for the duration of their five-week course.
From there, they work on the Greco-Roman settlement of Karanis and will experience visits to the Egyptian Museum in Cairo.
Participants work with Egyptian archaeology students and are assigned their own trench to excavate, with many having experienced the thrill of finding artefacts.
Among the discoveries were baskets, wooden tools and painted pottery, but this year's dig has left next year's intake with something special to look forward to.
According to the Daily Bruin, a trapdoor has been found which is believed to lead to a basement.
This year's team will not have enough time to fully excavate it but next year's intake will look forward to doing so.
Travellers often wish to explore the archaeological wonders of Egypt, including the Pyramids of Giza and the Valley of Luxor.
