The ecolodge, as it is most commonly called, lies on the shore of Birket Siwa, one of the larger salt lakes that are found in the area. It was the vision of one man, a pre-eminent Egyptian environmentalist, and has been built entirely in the traditional kharsif (salt-mud brick) style, and using only locally produced, environmentally-friendly materials such as translucent salt slabs instead of glass. No sacrifice of comfort has been made, and the lodge is a luxury escape in the desert. It is a unique place, built in the lee of a large, white outcrop and with wonderful views over the salt lake, desert and ancient Siwa.
