Jordan, though an Islamic nation, has a vibrant and well-preserved Christian heritage. The town of Madaba is still Christian, and amongst its churches are some superb mosaics, the most famous of which is a 6th century mosaic map depicting the Holy Land. It is fun to spend a while picking out the various cities and locations, and admiring the little vignettes the artist incorporated into the map. Mt Nebo is a very important Christian site, recently visited by the Pope, for it was here, on the edge of a ridge overlooking the Dead Sea, that Moses first caught sight of the Holy Land, having led his people from Sinai. It is said that he also died and was buried here. In the basilica that marks the spot, beautiful mosaics depict rustic scenes every bit as colourful as the day they were laid.
