In Roman times the Tripolitania province had three cities; Leptis Magna, Oea (now the modern Tripoli) and Sabratha.
Sabratha reached its monumental peak during the rule of the dynasty founded by Septimus Severus, but the city was badly damaged by earthquakes during the 4th century; it was rebuilt on a more modest scale by Byzantine governors. Within a hundred years of the Arab conquests, trade had shifted to other ports and Sabratha dwindled to a village.
Today the theatre is the main attraction and is in excellent condition having had some restoration, even now still being used as an arena for local theatre and concerts. The museum is a must, and has an extensive exhibition of everything from statues to small coins.
