Crossing the Chott El Jerid
The southwest of Tunisia plays host to countless arresting views, and given the Saharan sands, the gentle mountains and the oases which nurture hordes of palm trees, this is no surprise. In our view the beauty of the crossing the Chott El Jerid, a salt lake not far from Tozeur, is unsurpassed. A single causeway divides the two sides of the lake - on either side are seemingly unending salt crystals until the mountains appear on the horizon, but most extraordinary is the thin stream of water which hugs the causeway. To one side the water appears turquoise, while the other, just feet away, is a vivid red. Stopping the car to see it up close is a must.
