Tailor Made Holidays in Tunisia: Introduction

Standing in today’s Tunisia evokes its varied and fascinating past. The terrain underfoot belonged to the great Carthaginian Empire, whose wars with the Romans secured its place in history. The footprint of the Romans is in ample evidence across the land, from their magnificent towns in the northwest through to military outposts in the Sahara. The next to arrive were the Arabs in the seventh century, who invigorated the sleepy town of Tunis to make it a wealthy city which would eventually be the capital, and the city of Kairouan, one of Islam’s most holy centres. In the 19th and early 20th centuries, the French rule gave Tunisia a firm link to Europe which has endured to this day.

Tunisia, steeped in this history, is a beautiful country to explore. Her people are warm and welcoming, her sites remarkable and quiet, and her hotels vary considerably: one finds comfortable and practical options, luxurious and international choices, and traditional and arresting Dars. Tunisia is less than three hours from the UK by air and its warmer climes and the riches of its past make it an absorbing country to visit.
