Ethiopia joins the new millennium: 12-09-2007

Ethiopia has welcomed the new millennium – just over seven years later than the rest of the world.
The country follows a calendar which includes 13 months in each year and thus their new century is slightly out of sync with other nations.
However, thousands of people packed the main square of Addis Ababa to celebrate the unique date and enjoy the festivities. Complete with fireworks and a performance from US-band Black Eyed Peas, the party lasted well into the early hours of the morning when many donned white robes to attend church to continue the celebrations.
Prime minister Meles Zenawi believes the new millennium could signal a new start for the African nation and a period of greater prosperity and hope.
"A thousand years from now, when Ethiopians gather to welcome the fourth Millennium, they shall say the eve of the third millennium was the beginning of the end of the dark ages in Ethiopia," he said.
Authorities are now planning a series of events over the next 13 months to help promote the country and its culture.
