Beiteddine, Lebanon
Beiteddine village, south of Beirut, is home to the beautiful Beiteddine Palace.
Built in the 18th century by a local governor, part of the interest is in seeing the layout of a traditional Ottoman palace. You progress through a series of courtyards designed to instil a sense of distance between the ruler and his subjects. The first courtyard was open to all visitors, the second just to those on official business and the third was for the governor and his family alone.
The decoration of the palace is beautiful and it has also been used to house various collections of art and artefacts. Most impressive of these is the collection of Byzantine mosaics housed in the lower part of the palace.
Mosaics ranging from small vignettes to substantial floor pieces are decorated in geometric patterns and gorgeously rendered scenes filled with lifelike animals. It's the highlight of a visit to Beiteddine.
