One of the most sophisticated riads in Marrakesh, showcasing traditional design with great attention to detail.
On a busy street in the heart of the medina, perfectly located close to the Saadien Tombs, is a small door behind which lies a world of Moorish sophistication. Dar Les Cigognes is a former merchant's house which has been extensively redesigned by the Parisian architect Charles Boccara.
Traditional tadelakht walls (smooth earthen construction) are complemented by carved alabaster surrounds and cool white colour. Inside the riad is labyrinthine and authentic, with numerous courtyards, salons and winding staircases.
A Moroccan hammam is available for the traditionalist, while there is also a jacuzzi for those who prefer more modern comforts.
The interior decoration varies greatly throughout the property, lending individual character to each room and suite. Some follow the traditional Riad style with stronger, darker colours, while others have a more contemporary or colonial style.
Looking out to the Badi Palace, the roof terrace is a treat, with plenty of space for guests to relax with a drink at the end of the day while the sun sets.
The name of the Riad, which translates as 'Home of the Storks', makes perfect sense as you watch the large birds circle around their nests perched on the surrounding medina and palace walls.
