Theatre at Bosra
South of Damascus near the border with Jordan, Bosra is a fascinating place. It is most famous for its fabulously preserved Roman theatre, complete with banked seating facing a towering backdrop of columns and arches.
The theatre is enclosed within an Arab fortress and the rest of the town is built of the same dramatic black basalt.
Streets colonnaded with black Corinthian columns are set off by Umayyad-style minarets and the scene is shaded by verdant palms.
