    The villages in southern Tunisia are home to some ingenious local architecture. The village of Matmata features troglodyte dwellings, where rooms are several metres below ground level, whilst the ksours such as at Tataouine were used for storage, as defensive positions and for habitation.

    The Carthaginian and Roman ruins in Tunisia often play second fiddle to the superb beaches, which is a great shame. For those seeking to disappear into the spiritual heart of Tunis, one needs look no further than the Dar El Medina. Nestled in the very heart of the Medina, this Dar is the first of its kind in the capital.

Refurbished from an old house, the twelve rooms are all given popular Arabic girls’ names. Simplicity but comfort is the central principle, and it is by adhering to tradition that this maison de charme has truly succeeded.

Just like any traditional Tunisian house the exterior is unassuming, but once inside Dar El Medina one finds a small but airy courtyard with bougainvillea climbing the walls, a quiet restaurant in which one takes breakfast, as well as two stairways to the rooms.

On the top there is a charming open area to look out over the Medina of Tunis and take tea, and nearby are restaurants finished with the same love and vision where you can sample local cuisine.
