Travel Highlights in Tunisia

Things Tunisia is good for

Classical History

The Roman ruins in Tunisia often play second fiddle to her beaches, which is a shame. The great theatre of El Jem and the sizable cities like Bulla Regia and Dougga really are remarkable attractions, and deserve a place on your itinerary.

Desert

In the deep south west of the country are the edges of the Sahara Desert, a landscape of dunes, camels and stark mountains and canyons. The desert requires an investment of time and effort to explore, but will reward you with solitude and stunning scenery.

Medinas

The medinas of Tunisia's towns and cities are the walled hearts where the oldest souqs, streets and traditional houses are to be found. Some are absolutely stunning with whitewashed walls and delicately framed doors and windows: perfect for the keen photographer.

Salt Pans/Flats

The Chott El Jerid is a large expanse of salt flat near the Sahara Desert, broken only by a narrow causeway. Stretching away towards the mountain, the salt crust is fringed by water turned dramatic hues of blue and red by the minerals present in the salt.
