From here the choice awaits you - north to the great Central Asian cities of Samarkand and Bukhara, south over the Khunjerab Pass to Pakistan, or back to Beijing.

South of the great Taklamakan Desert lie some of China’s most startling and brilliant ancient remains. For the hardy it is possible to take a six-day overland journey between Turpan and Kashgar to unlock the Silk Route’s magnificent archaeological legacy.
