Ancient burial ground and technique: 09-09-2008
Travellers in Iran with a taste for adventure will be interested to know that archaeologists have uncovered an ancient burial ground dating back around 1,500 years.
Excavations discovered nails around the human remains, believed to have been placed in a deliberate fashion, not connected with a coffin, reports Cultural Heritage News Agency, Iran.
The discovery took place in the northern province of Mazandaran and is unique in that the placing of nails has never before been recorded.
Dating back to the Sassanid dynasty, the discovery features only young people and children and scientists believe the placing of the nails to be of some significance.
Included in the find were turquoise beads, silver spoons and bracelets, which were all found around the graves.
With excavations ongoing, intrigued travellers may feel that there may be a few pieces of this mystery that have yet to be uncovered.
