Tailor Made Holidays in Iran: Places to See and Stay

Audley in Iran

A direct consequence of the international sanctions on Iran is a paucity of high-end accommodation. International hotel chains are unable to operate in the country, thereby restricting visitors to Iranian-owned establishments, many of which are a little shabby these days. We always try to put our clients in the accommodation best suited to them, and most towns make up in interest what they lack in international-standard comfort. Iran has decent roads and infrastructure but Iranian domestic airlines do have a poor safety record. We will always try to book the best available planes flying on your intended route and will tell you which model of plane you have been booked on.

Local Culture & Etiquette

It is important that travellers are sensitive to the requirements of the culture through which they travel. In Iran this means that women must cover their arms and legs (loose fitting trousers and shirts are fine) and must also cover their hair. Only in the most sacred of places will female travellers be asked to don a chador (full-length veiled garment) and these are usually provided. On the whole a scarf over the hair will suffice. Alcohol is strictly illegal in Iran. Being caught drinking alcohol, or trying to take it with you, can incur very harsh penalties. Muslim holidays are always observed in Iran, and we will advise you if your trip coincides with any holidays of note.

The Political Situation

Iran has an unfortunate image in the West. Where we ought to see a complex and diverse nation born of Empire and conquest, we more usually see a one-dimensional, sclerotic theocracy in a perpetual state of defiance. This should not deter anyone from visiting. On the contrary, ordinary people that you encounter on your trip will treat you in the manner of an honoured guest. As with all countries in which Audley operates, the UK Foreign & Commonwealth Office acts as an unofficial arbiter of whether countries are safe to visit.
