Places to See and Stay: Gyeongju and The South - South Korea

Gyeongju, South Korea

With its roots dating back to 57 BC, Gyeongju is without question South Korea’s historical and cultural highlight. The area is scattered with remnants of the ancient Shilla Dynasty, from secluded temples and royal burial mounds to fortress ruins and a 7th-century observatory, as well as an amazing National Museum. The picturesque Namsan Mountains that form the backdrop to the town make a delightful area to stroll amongst the relics of one of Korea’s most glorious dynasties. Not far from Gyeongju is the traditional region of Andong, home to the Dosan Seowan Confucian Academy and the fascinating Hahoe Folk Village. Further west you will find the Gayasan and Jirisan national parks, the former being home to the venerated Haeinsa Temple, a UNESCO World Heritage Site containing some of the oldest surviving Buddhist texts. To the south, surrounded by the picturesque islands of Dadohae National Park, the scenic harbour town of Yeosu rests on a mountain-fringed peninsula and looks out towards the rural landscapes and traditional villages of Jeju Island.
