Tailor-made The Baltics: Introduction

Joanne Hoban, North & Central Asia Specialist I loved visiting the friendly Baltic countries, with three contrasting capitals and more to discover in the countryside.

Joanne Hoban, North & Central Asia Specialist, 01993 838206

Once obscure parts of the Soviet empire, the Baltic countries of Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania are now once again at the heart of Europe, with barely a Lada in sight.

Each country can be visited by itself for an in-depth discovery of their individual cultures, or as part of a joint tour to get a real flavour for the region. Step back in time with beautiful medieval cities, explore the lakes and forests of the countryside or, for relaxation, head to some of the spa resorts that can be found on the Estonian islands, or the pretty Curonian spit.

These young and newly confident countries have developed quickly since the end of Soviet times, and the high standard of facilities they offer is reflected in rising visitor numbers. This is definitely a destination to visit sooner rather than later, to enjoy the scenic and architectural wonders while they are still relatively unspoilt.

It is also possible to visit one or all of these destinations in combination with the fantastic cities of St Petersburg or Moscow, to explore the cultural and historic links of Russia with this area.
