I defy anyone not to be impressed and a little overwhelmed by the dramatic locations of Armenia's array of churches and monasteries - simply indescribable.

Armenia is the oldest Christian country in the world – the entire population converted in 301 AD – and has a clutch of related sights unparalleled anywhere outside of Palestine. The history of this diminutive country has been marked by its early embrace of Christianity, the Armenian Genocide of 1915 and the 70 years spent under Soviet rule. The richness of Armenia’s history is still very much in evidence - in the hallowed halls of Echmiadsin, the pagan temples of Garni and the precipitous monasteries of Noravank, Tatev and Haghpat. One surprise for the casual visitor is Armenia’s cuisine, full of fresh local herbs and ingredients, combining ideas from Persia, Russia and Greece with local specialities.
