Chengdu is the capital of Sichuan Province and like most other major Chinese cities, boasts a lengthy history of 2500 years, mostly associated with the arts and craft trade. the city’s streets are lined with teahouses where people will spend their afternoons playing mahjong.
Chengdu is the capital of Sichuan Province and like most other major Chinese cities, boasts a lengthy history of 2500 years, mostly associated with the arts and craft trade. The city has a similar layout to that of Beijing, centred round Tianfu Square with it’s Chairman Mao statue.
Although Chengdu is rapidly modernising, there are some lovely treelined avenues, back streets with delightful old wooden houses and bustling temples and monasteries to explore.
Chengdu people are famous throughout China for their relaxed, laid-back attitude to life, and the city’s streets are lined with teahouses where people will spend their afternoons drinking tea, eating sunflower seeds, having their fortunes told and playing mahjong.
There are many small restaurants specialising in wonderful spicy Sichuan cuisine and for a true taste of the region don't forget to try the Sichuan Hotpot, though be warned, this chilli soup is hot!
