It is roughly on the same latitude as Hawaii so enjoys warm temperatures year round and has China's best beaches, the main attraction for most visitors.

Yalong Bay has the best hotels spread along a long sandy beach. As well as lazing on beaches there are walking options in the Central Highlands or you could visit the macaque monkeys on Monkey Island.

Several minority groups inhabit Hainan including the Li and Miao who live in the forests while the Han Chinese mainly populate the coasts.
