    In some of the more rural parts of the country ethnic minority groups can be found in large numbers. Many of the same tribes that are found in Laos, Cambodia and Thailand have also settled in Yunnan province and also in Guizhou and Guangxi. Many still wear there traditional dress and so a visit to these regions is often a colourful one!

The remote area of Yuanyang is home to the Hani people whose distinctive triangular thatched homes are clustered in villages fascinating to visit. This area offers some of the most dramatic landscapes in China.

Driving southeast from Kunming you pass through one of China’s most dramatic landscapes. Sculpted rice terraces cling to the undulating hillsides, their glittering waters dancing with the brilliant reflected sunlight.

This is the remote area of Yuanyang, home to the Hani people whose distinctive triangular thatched homes are clustered in villages fascinating to visit.

Around Yuanyang

Continuing through the striking countryside, Tonghai is a sleepy little town unaccustomed to visitors. Wander the quiet pedestrian streets, or take a pony cart ‘taxi’ to visit Xiushan Park.

With its beautiful setting and natural spring water, this is especially popular with locals who gather to play mahjong or perform impromptu operas.
