Lijiang, China
Tiger Leaping Gorge measures 16km and has an awesome depth of 3,900 metres, making it one of the deepest gorges in the world. The Jinsha River, which later reverts into the Yangtze, squeezes between the Huba Mountains and the Jade Dragon Snow Mountain.
The Hutiao Gorge receives its name from an old Chinese legend that states that a tiger once jumped across the gorge at its narrowest part (approximately 30 metres in width).
A 2.5 hour drive from Lijiang to Qiaotou is followed by an hour’s walk to the mouth of the gorge. After lunch, explore the gorge before returning to Lijiang.
