Sounkyo

Hokkaido, Japan

The small collection of hot spring resort hotels and restaurants that make up the Sounkyo Resort may be a little brash and unsubtle in their fine natural setting, but they offer excellent access into Japan's largest national park, the magnificent Daisetsuzan region.

From the top of the Sounkyo cable car the peaks of the central mountain range are clearly visible, and within manageable walking range for those with a reasonable level of fitness.

The gorge itself has a number of spectacular waterfalls, but as much of the road is in tunnels the drive through doesn't give much of an impression of the grandeur of the scenery.
