Tsukiji Fish Market
Tokyo, Japan
Tsukiji fish market is the biggest wholesale fish and seafood market in the world has been in business since the early Edo period (1600s), although not in its present incarnation.
The first location of the market was over in Nihonbashi but after the Great Kanto Earthquake in 1923, which devastated much of the city, it was moved to Tsukiji.
Today, the market is a booming business which opens for trade and auctions at around 3am but visitors are now restricted to 5am to 6.15am only.
Visitors are welcome to watch the proceedings, but are asked to maintain a respectful distance from the traders who are ultimately there to do a job and not act as a tourist attraction! A fresh sushi and sashimi breakfast before you leave the markets comes highly recommended.
