Reasons To
Visit Kyrgyzstan

  • Lakes

Kyrgyzstan is home to two pristine and deep alpine lakes, Issyk-Kul which never freezes over and provides the main lakeside towns with a pleasant climate and Song-Kol, which although smaller is equally beautiful.

  • Mountains

94% of Kyrgyzstan landscape is mountainous, with jagged, rugged, peaks towering above the flatter plains. Most of the peaks form part of the dramatic Tian Shan range which sweeps through Central Asia into China.

  • Nomadic culture

The Kyrgyz have always been a nomadic nation, with customs today developing from the ancient traditions of nomad ancestors. From living quarters to how communities are run the nomadic heritage remains vitally important in Kyrgyzstan.

  • Remote wilderness

Terrain in Kyrgyzstan is difficult and barren, often treacherous and unknown. However some of the world’s greatest journeys begin here, including crossing the stunning Torugart Pass.

  • Walking

The opportunities for light hiking or more adventurous trekking are endless. Two of our favourite spots are Ala Archa Canyon and the Jeti Oghuz Valley.

Accommodation in Kyrgyzstan: Usupov Sobirjon Guesthouse

Our Rating: Basic

Usupov Sobirjon Guesthouse

Arslanbob

The welcoming Usupov family own and run Arslanbob CBT guesthouse No 9. Their home is toward the top of the village up a bumpy cobbled track, a steep 10 minute walk from the CBT office in the village centre.

As with the majority of properties here it is part home and part small holding. The family have a small plot used to grow potatoes, maize and sunflowers, and keep chickens, a few geese and an enormous turkey.

Rooms in the separate accommodation building are simple but clean and comfortable, though beds are a little on the small side. The village is without running water so washing facilities are basic, but the family will happily run you a bath if required.

In addition to the friendly hosts the homestay's finest feature is the covered, open-air dining room where the delicious and plentiful home-cooked meals are served.

From here the snowcapped summit of Mt Babash Ata is perfectly framed by the poplar trees, making it a wonderful spot to pass a couple of relaxing days.
