  • Monasteries & Shamanism

It's virtually impossible to travel in Mongolia for any length of time without encountering something which relates to Mongolian spirituality. Buddhist monasteries can be found within the major towns and cities whilst cairns of stones and other offerings litter the countryside, festooned with vivid blue prayer flags.

Anar Ger Camp

Kharakorum

Anar Ger Camp is set on the Olkhon River, some three miles from Kharakorum and the monastery of Erdene Zuu.

The camp is well-spaced in its layout, with a separate shower and toilet block, and a ger restaurant that serves hearty food in western style.

On the banks of the river is one of the camp's more eccentric facilities - a large wooden ship, permanently moored, that serves as the camp bar. Whilst somewhat incongruous, this ship bar is an excellent place to sit in the late evening, take a cool drink, and watch local fishermen trying to catch dinner from an old soviet mill-race slightly upstream.
