Lake Baikal, the ‘Pearl of Siberia’, is a place of breathtaking beauty and mind-boggling statistics: at 1,637 metres it is the world’s deepest lake, containing an incredible fifth of the world’s fresh water.

At 636 kilometres long the lake is bigger than Belgium, and has water of such crystal clarity that visibility extends to a depth of 40 metres.

Lake Baikal's culture

Baikal has been home to various ethnic groups for millennia, and the shamanistic Buryat people still reside in settlements of wood cabins around the lake shore.

Activities

This is one of the most magnificent natural sights on the planet, and offers lovers of the outdoors fabulous opportunities for hiking, horse trekking, fishing and boating.

Many visitors choose to stay at picturesque Listvyanka village, where the Angara River meets the lake, and begin their explorations from here.
