Buddist temple, Ulan Ude
Village of Old Believers, near Ulan Ude
Located to the eastern side of Lake Baikal, the Buryat capital of Ulan Ude has a distinctly Asiatic atmosphere, and for those not continuing into Mongolia offers a chance to visit working Buddhist monasteries and sample a taste of the steppes.
Beyond the Stalinist centre the town still holds wooden dwellings from the 18th and 19th centuries, and the surrounding area offers a fascinating range of cultural and scenic diversions.
On an overnight train, try tea Russia-style: black, with sugar, served in a glass, while dodging a tea spoon left in it. The spoon is a subject for many Russian jokes!
