Sergiev Posad Excursion
Moscow, Russia
Known as Zagorsk during the years of communism, Sergiev Posad is a small town at a small distance from Moscow. The town is centred around its golden heart - the exalted monastery of St Sergius.
Founded in 1340 by the patron saint of Russia, St Sergius of Radonej, the fortified monastery at Sergiev Posad is one of two 'Lavra' monasteries in Russia - considered to be raised above the status of others in importance and beauty.
A visit to the Monastery, with its working Trinity and Assumption Cathedrals decorated by the famed Andrei Rubilyov, is a journey to the heart of the Russian religious experience.
The grounds are filled with the faithful who come to pray, whilst the skyline is dominated by the spires and belltowers of a number of architectural landmarks.
