  • National history

Culturally, Taiwan has a more genuinely preserved collection of Chinese artefacts than the mainland, with the National Palace Museum in Taipei home to the world's largest collection thanks to Chiang Kai-shek's mass pilfer during the Chinese civil war.

Our country specialists have travelled the length and breadth of Taiwan - here are a few of their favourite things to do

Fom the bustling, high-tech capital in the north to the palm fringed, golden beaches in the south, Taiwan is North Asia’s surprise jewel, often regrettably overlooked in favour of its larger neighbours.

Landscape and scenery

Early Portuguese sailors gave Taiwan the name ‘Ihla Formosa’ which means ‘Beautiful Island’, and it’s easy to see why. Sheer cliffs drop vertical into the ocean, deep canyons cut breathtakingly through her middle and a thick forest stretches across a mountainous region, covering two thirds of the island in green.

Culture

Taiwan is also home to some of the most welcoming people in all of Asia, the world’s finest collection of Chinese artefacts, and a colourful and dynamic culture that shines unique from its neighbour across the Taiwan Strait.
