  • City Life

Taipei is a thoroughly modern and typically bustling Asian city, with many superb restaurants and shopping opportunities. It's also a great base for day trips to the national parks, hot springs and lush hills of northern Taiwan.

  • Hot springs

Sitting on the same volcanic ridge as Japan, hot springs are plentiful in Taiwan. Tucked away in the mountains that surround Taipei are dozens of thermal springs, offering highly relaxing alternative to city life.

  • National history

Culturally, Taiwan has a more genuinely preserved collection of Chinese artefacts than the mainland, with the National Palace Museum in Taipei home to the world's largest collection thanks to Chiang Kai-shek's mass pilfer during the Chinese civil war.

Taiwan

Taipei is the thriving heart of Taiwan and the bustling centre of commerce, government and culture.

It is home to one of the world's tallest buildings, the world's largest museum of Chinese artefacts (home to around 720,000 items in all!) and will undoubtedly be the first stop on any tour in Taiwan.

Exploring Taipei

Away from the rat-race and pulsating energy of the centre, Taipei also offers surprising respite in the gardens within the Chiang Kai-Shek Memorial, the Botanical Gardens and on short day trips to the thickly forested Yangmingshan National Park and the traditional teahouses of Keelung.

Be sure, also, not to miss the Shilin night market and the popular Taoist Lungshan Temple for an insight into the local culture.
