    For wildlife viewing, there are few better places in the world than the Pantanal between April and September. The animals and birds found here are similar to those found in the nearby Amazon, but they are much easier to spot in the Pantanal. Animals seen here include capybara, caiman, anteater, armadillo, otter, marmoset and even jaguar and puma.

Pousada Rio Mutum

The Pantanal

Pousada Rio Mutum is located between the Sia Mariana and Chacorore lakes in the state of Mato Grosso. It consists of 16 simple air conditioned apartments, each with hammock on the veranda and hot water.

The area around the apartments, the dining room and reception area is grassy and dotted with a variety of local trees from mango to cashew which are a haven for birds and animals including macaws, paraqueets and if you're lucky at night, Brazilian porcupines. Nightime also sees the arrival of local capybara which munch noisily, keeping the grass around the apartments freshly trimmed.

The Mutum river flows steadily about 100 metres from the lodge but during the wet season it rises almost to the edge of the hotel complex. All meals are served in a buffet style and as well as the staples of rice and beans, offer a range of meats, locally caught fish and vegetables.

On arrival guests talk through their interests and desired levels of activity with the staff and excursions are assigned day by day in a typical laid back Brazilian style which does actually work very well in ensuring that everyone sees as much as possible in the time that they have at the lodge.
