New film: Love in the Time of Cholera: 11-02-2008
The recent film 'Love in the time of Cholera', ('Amor en los tiempos del cólera') is based on the best-selling novel written in 1985 by the Nobel Prize-winning author, Gabriel García Márquez. It tells the story of a love triangle spanning five decades from the late 19th to the early 20th century. It is set in an unnamed port somewhere in the Caribbean but descriptions of it have led countless readers to believe it must be Cartagena, Colombia where García Márquez was brought up.
García Márquez tells a seemingly heart-warming story about the power of enduring love and explores the idea that suffering for love, particularly the unrequited kind, by its very nature, brings forth nobility and is apparently rewarded in the end. On the other hand the novelist himself warns us not to be seduced by his story which also arguably depicts love as a rather more sinister force that attacks and shrivels the body, like cholera.
Filming in Cartagena
The majority of the film is set within the Caribbean coast of Colombia and primarily in the gorgeous walled-city of Cartagena. The setting is perfect, as walking around Cartagena often feels like you have stepped back in time as it has been so well preserved and therefore ideal for the film-makers, who would presumably have had to do very little to change the streets before filming.
Our ground agents, Colombia57 also make a very brief appearance in the film, where they are dressed in the finery of the day and sit amongst many lovely Colombian ladies in a house of ill-repute!
