Christmas in Quito: 11-12-2007

Christmas in Quito18390027Christmas is celebrated differently in South America and Quito in Ecuador is a great place for holiday makers to get a different cultural experience.

Attending the Christmas Eve midnight mass, singing, praying and eating cookies dipped in chocolate are a few things that holidaymakers can expect from a trip to the Ecuadorian country.

The nativity scene is also played out with many of the figures dressed in local and elaborate national costumes offering the chance for visitors to catch live performances of the event.

Traditionally, Christmas dinner is eaten on December 24th and it mainly consists of stuffed turkey, grapes and raisins, salad, rice with cheese, sweetcorn and lots of wine.

Presents are still opened on Christmas day when everyone has woken up after midnight mass, or the Misa del Gallo, as it is known locally.

Preparations for New Year begin quickly after Christmas is over and mannequins and dolls that represent figures and events from the old year are stuffed with hay and fireworks in preparation for the public display.
