The Nazca Lines are one of the world's great mysteries. They are a series of animal figures and geometric shapes that have been etched into the barren desert close to the coast in Southern Peru. These figures can be up to 200 metres in length, and each one was created with one continuous line and can thus only be appreciated from the air.
However, these figures were carved by the Nazca civilisation, who lived in the area about 2000 years ago. The figures were spotted from the air 70 years ago, and have since been studied intently.
There have been many explanations put forward as to their purpose and how they were created. Some believe the figures (which include a hummingbird, condor and spider) were part of a giant astronomical calendar. Others believe that the ancient Peruvians could fly (in something similar to hot air balloons) and that the Nazca Lines are merely artwork whilst others think they are the work of extra-terrestrials.
You are be picked up in the morning from your hotel to drive to Ica, a journey of around 3.5 hours. In Ica you will board a small plane (from 4 to 16 seater, depending on how many other people wish to fly) for your overflight of the Nazca Lines, which last approximately 20 minutes, with 20 minutes each way flying to the area. The pilots will provide a commentary of the Lines.
After the excursion you will drive back to Lima where you will be transferred to your hotel.
