Lima, Peru
  • Culture & History

This tour of the Peruvian capital includes the "Huaca Pucllana" archaeological site and the historical centre including the Plaza de Armas where you can see the blue and scarlet suited guards outside the Presidential Palace. Adjacent is the cathedral, designed by Francisco Becerra, it was modelled on that in the Spanish town of Jean and, similarly, has three aisles in a Renaissance style.

When Becerra died in 1605 the cathedral was far from finished and took a further 40 years to complete. It has since been destroyed by at least two earthquakes and re-built.

You then move on and explore the church, convent, chapels and catacombs of San Francisco. Built in the 17th Century, the church and convent contain valuable works of art. The cloisters are finished in fine tile work, the sacristy is hung with oils of great artistic value and artefacts decorated in gold leaf; it also has a large library of antique books.

In addition, the catacombs beneath the church, and which were used as a cemetery in the 17th Century, can still be visited.

The end of the tour will take you through the residential districts of San Isidro and Miraflores where you will enjoy a magnificent view of the Pacific Ocean.
