Where to spot birds in Venezuela

There are three main areas in Venezuela where you will experience birdlife.

The Andean city of Merida offers a chance to spot endemic and migratory birds on your way up into the surrounding hills, best in September and October.

In the jungle area of the Orinoco Delta, birdlife is relatively sparse due to human population density, habitat destruction or as a result of people taking them for pets. Despite this, you may still be able to spot flocks of scarlet ibis, cuckoo, hoatzin, whistling duck, chachalacas and parakeet.

VenezuelaFar more impressive is the birdlife of Los Llanos, the wetlands area of Venezuela. Scarlet ibis, jabiru and other storks, herons, the beautiful vermilion flycatcher, red-capped cardinals, Amazon kingfishers, Orinoco and Brazilian ducks, jacana and, a favourite amongst many visitors, the incredibly brave (or witless) burrowing owls, standing by their burrow right on the dirt vehicle track, staring at passers-by with their huge eyes.
