Orang-utan & Ibans in Borneo

Spend time in an Iban's tribal longhouse and visit endangered orang-utan of Borneo's Sabah and Sarawak regions.

Although Borneo is most often associated with wildlife, there is also a wealth of fascinating indigenous cultures.

Longhouse, Kudat, SabahThe most populous tribe are the Iban who are best known for their reputation as headhunters, a tradition that only died out in the mid-twentieth century. Even now the Iban people live in villages of distinctive longhouses and the men still maintain the tradition of tattooing.

Those interested in this way of life can visit or even stay overnight in one of the longhouses, with our favourites being those in the foothills beside the Sarawak/Kalimantan border, sited close to the breathtaking Batang Ai reservoir.
