Turtle Island National Park
Borneo
Also known as Selingan Island, it is named after the turtles which come ashore to lay their eggs once the sun has set.
Green and hawksbill turtles
Both green and hawksbill turtles are common here, which means the chances of seeing a mother laying her eggs are high all year round. The sight of giant turtles hauling themselves up the beach, sometimes as many as a hundred or more at one time, is unforgettable.
The island has been designated a national park to protect the newly laid eggs and vulnerable hatchlings from predators. The hatchlings are incubated and born in a breeding centre on the island, under the watchful eyes of park wardens, before being set free.
The accommodation here is basic, but nothing can spoil the experience of seeing the tiny turtles released into the black night sea.
