A Visitor's Guide to Burma

Burma, or Myanmar as it is officially known, is one of Audley's original destinations - we've been planning tailor-made trips to Burma for over 15 years. Now that Burma is 'back on the map', visitors are discovering its wealth of highlights and especially its charming hosts, the Burmese people themselves.

When to go

Sarus CraneThe ideal time to visit is during the dry season, which falls between November and April. Certain regions can be very wet during our summer months, but due to the size of the country it is possible to avoid these areas and still plan a worthwhile tour. The plains of Pagan and Mandalay are very hot during our summer but the sunshine is interrupted by short, heavy showers. The hills can be cold through the UK winter months.

When to book

A novice monk shares a smile at a monasteryFor those thinking of travelling to Burma we recommend booking at least 9-12 months in advance for travel in peak season - November to March - to ensure that we can offer you accommodation that we are happy with.

You might also want to combine your visit with one of Burma's colourful annual festivals such as the Phaung Daw Oo Pagoda Festival, one of the largest Buddhist festivals in the country, or the Taunggyi Fire-Balloon Festival in Shan State. Our Burma specialists, who regularly visit the country, can advise you further.
