Sittwe, the capital of the Rakhine state, is reached by a short flight from Rangoon and Ngapali Beach.
It is a major and historic port town on the Bay of Bengal, with a busy market where fishermen bring in their daily catch.
Quite different in its architecture and cuisine from other parts of the country, Sittwe has a Burmese-Muslim population and an eclectic mix of mosques, pagodas and monasteries, as well as the first Anglican church to be built in Burma.
Accommodation options are limited to two small, private hotels that, although functional, are a little characterless.
Only an overnight stop is warranted here as the main reason to visit is to board a boat for the 50 mile journey up the Kaladan River or to start the day long drive to remote and little-visited Mrauk U.
In Yangon, delicious meals can be found away from the crowds in the Indian tea shops throughout the city.
