Reasons To
Visit Cambodia

  • Festivals

Otherwise known as the water festival, Bon Om Tuk is when Siem Reap and Phnom Penh come alive. Cambodia's most important festival, Bon Om Tuk celebrates the turning of the water in the Mekong, a phenomenon to which the Tonle Sap owes its very existence.

  • Khmer people

Despite Cambodia`s turbulent history the Khmer people show true strength of character. Everywhere you travel you will be greeted with a smile, from the urbanites of Siem Reap and Phnom Penh to the eclectic indigenous populations of the remote Rattanakiri and Mondulkiri provinces.

  • Local cuisine

Often overlooked by the more famous cuisine from its neighbours Cambodia is actually home to some savoury delights. Sample a tasty amok at the market in Siem Reap or indulge in Kep's delicious crab. For those more adventurous you could try an infamous deep fried spider or cricket!

  • South coast

From the sleepy coastal town of Kep with its dilapidated 1960s villas to the mangroves near Koh Kong, the Southcoast has plenty to offer. And for a bit of barefoot luxury, you can spend some time at Song Saa or the 'Sweetheart' islands.

  • Temples of Angkor

The number of visitors to Angkor multiplies exponentially each year but we can recommend ways to appreciate even the busiest sites, like Angkor Wat, and would encourage you to visit some of the lesser-known temples, such as Beng Melea and Banteay Srei. Alternatively, escape the crowds and explore the temples further afield on a temple camping safari.

  • The Khmer Rouge

It's hard to ignore the mass genocide of an estimated 2 million people. The effects of Polpot transcend the nation and every Khmer can tell you a story of their time under the despot, the history can be felt and explored throughout the country - from the historical musuems in Phnom Penh to the final resting place of Pol Pot near Anlong Veng.

Visit Mondulkiri, Cambodia

The easternmost province of Mondulkiri is one of the last unexplored frontiers in Cambodia. Here you can experience elephant trekking, visiting local hill tribes and the local wildlife.

Mondulkiri

Cambodia

The easternmost province of Mondulkiri is one of the last unexplored frontiers in Cambodia.

Mondulkiri is the largest of Cambodia’s provinces yet has a population of only 50,000, most of whom are Phnong and Khmer.

The journey from Phnom Penh is long, bumpy and certainly not for the faint hearted but those choosing to venture here, will not be disappointed. The area is scattered with hill tribes, brimming with waterfalls and rich in picturesque scenery and lush tropical forest. This remote area is little visited but with slight improvements in the roads it is becoming more accessible.

Activities and local culture in Mondulkiri

Mondulkiri is most famous for elephant trekking and the small villages of Phulung and Putang, just outside Sen Monorom, offer treks varying in length from two hours to two days. Elephants are an important part of life here, being valuable members of the village and still a valid form of transportation.

Shorter treks journey through small villages and into the fringes of the forest whilst longer treks venture deep into the jungle past refreshing waterfalls where few visitors go. Bou Sraa Waterfalls are the largest and most famous in all of Cambodia.

Hilltribes of Mondulkiri

The hilltribes of Mondulkiri enjoy a different culture than those in other provinces and this is pre-eminently displayed in their unique architecture and lifestyle. Three or four families share one home together as they prefer to live in groups. There are many ethnic minority villages and a visit to any one is an eye-opening experience.

Trekking

Trekking can also be arranged including overnight camping in the forest. The deeper you explore into the forest the wilder and more untamed it becomes, and you may even see the rare wild elephants, leopards and bears that reside deep in the jungle.
