Tailor Made Holidays in Burma: In the News

Rare birds found in Burma: 15-02-2008

A group of rare sandpipers has been discovered in Burma, bringing hope to conservationists. The group of 84 spoon-billed sandpipers have been found on a coastal stretch of the country, despite few being seen in their breeding grounds in Russia and Bangladesh.

According to the World Conservation Union there are only 200 to 300 pairs of this rare bird left in the wild, and Adrian Long, head of communications at BirdLife, is anxious to stress that the species hasn't yet been saved. "Finding 80 is fantastic, but if we found 800, we would be really, really happy," he told National Geographic. Finding them in Burma, however, increases the possibility of them breeding in other locations.
