Places to See and Stay: Mergui Myeik Archipelago - Burma

The Mergui (Myeik) archipelago is a beautiful cluster of islands located off the southernmost tip of Myanmar, close to the Thai border. The entry point into Myanmar is at Kawthaung, and it is then a short boat ride to these idyllic islands. There are more than 800 of these pristine, unspoilt islands, and they are home to the sea gypsies, or Moken, who until recently were famous for their piracy. There are reports of these sea gypsies diving to depths of over 60 metres with rocks tied round their waists and breathing through an air hose held above the surface of the water. There are very few accommodation options here, in fact we are only aware of one, and a stay here will mean that you really are getting away from it all!
