Cambodia pushes for temple landmark recognition: 03-07-2008

Cambodia is once again pushing for the 11th century Preah Vihear temple to be named a world heritage site.

The temple sits between the border of Thailand and Cambodia and was declared Cambodian territory by the World Court 46 years ago, to the anger of Thai officials.

Cambodia has since been working to have the temple named a Unesco world heritage site, but Thailand has once again refused to endorse its application.

The issue has become increasingly volatile over the years, with riots having taken place in Phnom Penh in 2003 following objections.

Now, news agency AFP reports that the Cambodian government has shut down the temple because of Thai protests.

A Unesco application last year by Cambodians was unsuccessful and officials believe it was because of Thai obstruction.

The Thai coalition government are this week deciding on whether to delay or back the Cambodian bid.

Following a cabinet meeting this week, deputy prime minister and education minister Somchai Wongsawat told the Bangkok Post: "The cabinet ordered the Council of State to see what the government's next step should be."
