Tigers and elephants returning to Cambodia: 28-05-2008

Tigers and elephants returning to Cambodia18612910Tigers and elephants are making a return to the war-torn forests of Cambodia as the end of conflict is making the region safe again.

A project led by the WWF is conserving the forests of the Mondulkiri Province in eastern Cambodia and it has prompted the return of several species including Indochinese tigers, Asian elephants and the giant ibis.

Conflict between Cambodia and Vietnam resulted in many animals being wiped out but now the WWF has enlisted the help of former poachers to maintain the area.

Lean Kha, who used to shoot the animals, told National Geographic that the animals now needed protection for future generations.

The park forests have little human life and it is only through camera traps that researchers have found the animals to be returning.

Nick Cos, who is coordinating the programme on behalf of WWF, said that there was a lot of wildlife in the region.

This can only continue if the rangers such as Mr Kha protect the forests from the poachers looking to kill the animals for meat.
